Okay, there might be something messed up about the github naming convention. This was the full gif, renamed to "pirate-short.gif", uploaded - it uploaded as 2 bytes.

renaming files in github also wipes their content
...
the "rename" form also conflates rename with editing, and it replaces the gif images with an empty text buffer. there might be an alternative way to rename in the github ui
should stop being lazy and just clone the project
